Celebrity photographer Art Zelin is a survivor. As the son of a Mafia foot soldier, he learned to take care of himself on the streets of Brooklyn and he didn’t take “No” for an answer.
These skills served him well once he picked up his first camera as a teenager and discovered the world of paparazzi photography.
Despite his gruff exterior, Art Zelin’s core decency and sweet nature made him a favorite of New York elites and celebrities at hotspots all over the city in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s.
Capturing more than 40,000 images of everything from the Beatles in concert to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and her family to Hollywood vixens, Art Zelin documented a forgotten world before 9/11 where the doors were wide open to the private lives of the beautiful, the rich and the famous of New York.
The Art Zelin Collection launched on Getty Images in 2015 and is available for licensing for the first time ever. Blue Chalk Media profiled the photographer in this short video to help promote the launch and to give some context to the amazing images that he took.
